Home » Roma Turns the Page with Gasperini, but Ranieri Needed to Calm the Storm

Gian Piero Gasperini is set to begin a new chapter as head coach of Roma. After nine successful seasons at Atalanta, the Piedmontese manager is expected at Trigoria to sign a three-year contract reportedly worth between 5 and 6 million euros per season. He recently took a final break in Paris, attending the Roland Garros, but his schedule in Rome is already full. Preseason preparations will begin in mid-July, starting at Trigoria before moving to England’s St. George’s Park training center, just like last year. The friendly match calendar is still being finalized, due to several ongoing managerial changes in Serie A.
Gasperini’s arrival represents a significant tactical shift for Roma, a club used to different footballing philosophies. While it may take time for his influence to show on the pitch, the first key decisions will be announced in the coming days, including the official start of training and initial transfer market plans. The coach’s objectives are ambitious: beyond returning Roma to the Champions League after six years, he hopes to climb the all-time Serie A coaching appearance rankings. With 599 matches to his name, Gasperini has his sights set on reaching the 635 of club legend Nils Liedholm.
Despite his track record, some fans remain skeptical, more due to Gasperini’s personality and past than his technical credentials. In this context, Claudio Ranieri’s role will be crucial. As the Friedkin Group’s new advisor, he is expected to serve as a key link between Gasperini, the club, and the city. The broader vision is clear: to build a new “Zingonia” in the capital and restore Roma to the top tier of Italian football.
