Newly appointed Milan coach Sergio Conceição is set to face a major test in his first week on the job, as he prepares his side for the Supercoppa Italiana final against Inter. Speaking at a press conference in Riyadh, Conceição expressed confidence while acknowledging the difficulties of taking on a well-drilled and experienced Inter side.
“Inter is a strong team, used to winning, with the same coach and players who have been together for a long time. That’s great for them, but we must focus on ourselves. It won’t be easy, but in difficult moments we must stand up and be men, remembering that our fans are watching.”
Conceição noted that several key Milan players are not at peak fitness, but stressed the importance of staying united and ambitious in pursuit of the title.
Conceição, who enjoyed a successful playing career in Italy, reflected on his deep connection with the country and the honor of coaching a historic club like Milan: “I’ve had many great coaches, but Eriksson had a special relationship with his players. I have Sven in my heart, as well as all the players from that Lazio team. I’ve also worked with Sacchi and Malesani. I love Italy; it’s my second home. Coaching a historic club like Milan is a great pleasure and honor.”
He added that while he respects all teams he’s played for, his focus now is solely on preparing his Milan players to face a strong opponent in Inter.
When asked about the status of Rafael Leão, Conceição admitted uncertainty regarding the forward’s fitness: “We’ll train in the afternoon and evaluate. He definitely doesn’t have 90 minutes in him, but we’ll see whether he can play or not.”
This leaves Milan fans waiting anxiously for updates on one of their key players ahead of the crucial final.
Conceição also revealed that he gives significant attention to even the smallest details, highlighting the role of the team’s nutritionist: “Yes, I’ve spoken with the nutritionist. He’s an important person for our team. I pay attention to every detail because players need to be at 100%.”
Despite their friendship, Conceição is fully focused on outmaneuvering Inzaghi and leading Milan to their first trophy under his leadership.
The Supercoppa Italiana final presents an early challenge and an opportunity for Sergio Conceição to make a statement as Milan’s new coach. Despite injury concerns and fitness doubts surrounding key players like Rafael Leão, Conceição remains determined to instill ambition and unity in his squad.
With the stakes high and the Derby della Madonnina adding extra intensity, Conceição’s Milan will need to overcome a strong and experienced Inter side, led by Inzaghi, to claim the first silverware of the season. Fans can expect a hard-fought battle as the two rivals clash for glory in Riyadh.
